Plans submitted for new sustainable urban neighbourhood at Goods Station

Goods Station plans have been submitted to bring the new neighbourhood to the heart of Birmingham

Plans for the Goods Station have been evolving over the last two years as urban regeneration specialist Vita Group has carefully shaped its proposals for Birminghamโ€™s Goods Station through extensive engagement with the local community, key stakeholders and Birmingham City Council. A detailed planning application has now been submitted for the redevelopment of the former Axis Square site which has laid vacant for a number of years with the vision to deliver a new sustainable urban neighbourhood on this key gateway to the Westside district of Birmingham.ย

At the heart of the proposal for Goods Station, five new buildings designed by award winning architect SimpsonHaugh, set around a new urban garden which establishes a fully accessible route from Navigation Street to Holliday Street. The masterplan will include three residential buildings creating 990 new homes, a 221-room serviced apartment building and a PBSA plot delivered under Vita Groupโ€™s House of Social brand which also includes a 17,000 sq.ft. public food hall that will celebrate the cityโ€™s emerging food scene with independent kitchens showcasing their culinary concepts.ย

If approved, the socio-economic benefits of the site for the city (and the wider region) are significant. In its construction phase alone, the regeneration of the site is expected to create circa 485 jobs in the West Midlands and will contribute circa ยฃ245M to the local economy.

Once complete, the Goods Station will continue to benefit the city, creating around 185 jobs on-site, generating ยฃ2.4M additional council tax for the city and adding circa ยฃ7.8M Birminghamโ€™s economy each year.  If the plans are successful, Vita Group will look to break ground in the Autumn of 2025.

Jon Weston, Development Director at Vita Group said: โ€œOver the past two years weโ€™ve been working closely with Birmingham City Council, key stakeholders, and the local community to shape the future of this key strategic site, completely transforming a vacant brownfield site into a new, sustainable urban neighbourhood. The Goods Station has the opportunity to be an important catalyst for change in the city, creating new homes and jobs, whilst adding to the cityโ€™s expanding cultural and hospitality sector creating a new vibrant neighbourhood with significant social and economic benefits.

Place & Community

01

Place & Community

Create thriving communities, a principle which has been with us from the very start, itโ€™s simply not good enough to create a building without thinking carefully about its context and the wider impact it has on its surrounding neighbourhood. Weโ€™re driven to create communities within communities as well as respond to and complement the neighbourhood and its eco-system. Creating tomorrowโ€™s city living means we must be part of the DNA of that city and partnering with local authorities. This includes connecting with local suppliers, talent, charities, and businesses, collaborating on important community initiatives and helping to develop surrounding spaces. Itโ€™s not just about helping to regenerate cities; itโ€™s helping them to function effectively.

Society

Society

We know that in helping to create tomorrowโ€™s cities, we have a responsibility to have the best possible impact on society as a whole. As such, we wonโ€™t be afraid to challenge those things which just donโ€™t sit right. So donโ€™t be surprised to see us take a knee at the start of a sporting event, celebrate key religious holidays, and fly the rainbow flag for pride. To create a better tomorrow, we must stand together today.

Environment

Environment

To really effect change and create a platform in which cities thrive, we know we need to look beyond building design, carbon creation and energy usage. We must tackle bigger issues and help change behaviours, as such weโ€™re creating initiatives which help users across the platform understand the role they can play in reducing our impact on the world.
